The Marlins are designating first baseman Eric Wagaman for assignment to make room for outfielder Esteury Ruiz following a trade. Wagaman, 28, had a .250/.296/.378 batting line with nine home runs in 514 plate appearances this season, and despite his ability to play various corner positions, he struggled as an everyday player. Miami plans to replace him with Christopher Morel, who has more power potential but also has faced challenges. Wagaman, who has minor league options remaining, may attract interest from teams seeking left-handed hitters before his DFA period ends in January.
