MLB contract extension candidates: 10 players who could ink new deals, plus predictions of what they’d get

As MLB teams gear up for spring training, they are also focusing on signing their own players to long-term extensions. Last year saw several players signing lucrative deals, and more are expected to follow suit this year. Some notable extension candidates to watch out for this spring include Bobby Witt Jr., Mitch Keller, Ezequiel Tovar, Brayan Bello, and Ceddanne Rafaela. Expect more players to sign long-term extensions before Opening Day. Caminero, a highly regarded young hitter for the Rays, is a promising talent at only 21 years old. The team has a history of locking up their top players early, and they may try to do the same with him. However, the uncertainty of the team’s long-term home could impact his decision to sign a long-term deal despite his potential. Julio Rodríguez signed a 12-year, $210 million contract with the Mariners in his rookie season, based on his established performance. Comparatively, Caminero may be more aligned with Corbin Carroll’s eight-year, $111 million deal with the Diamondbacks, adjusting for inflation. A potential contract for Caminero could be around eight years and $120 million, giving the Rays additional control beyond the standard six years. The Red Sox traded for Crochet from the White Sox in December, giving up two first-round picks. The 25-year-old pitcher is seen as the ace the Red Sox have been missing and discussions about a contract extension have taken place. Crochet will be a free agent after the 2026 season, making an extension a priority for the Red Sox. Crochet has expressed interest in staying in Boston long-term. Crochet’s career path from reliever to All-Star starter presents challenges in contract negotiations with the Red Sox, who may want to include injury protection clauses. A potential six-year extension could total $150 million in guaranteed money, exceeding recent similar deals in the league. Negotiations with the Cardinals for a 2025 contract have yet to be resolved.
