Memphis and New Orleans have agreed to a four-player trade primarily aimed at helping the Pelicans save money to sign free agent Bennedict Mathurin. The Pelicans will send Jordan Hawkins, Micah Peavy, a future second-round pick, and a second-round swap to the Grizzlies for AJ Johnson and Taj Gibson. While Memphis gains a second-round pick and swap, New Orleans is expected to waive Gibson, giving Johnson a chance to earn a roster spot. Both Hawkins and Peavy face uncertainty regarding their final roster status in Memphis, where they must reduce their player count before the season begins.
