The Dallas Cowboys will be without Pro Bowl offensive lineman Tyler Smith for at least the first four games of the season as he recovers from thumb ligament surgery. Despite initially attempting to play through the injury, the decision was made to place him on injured reserve for a more effective recovery. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer praised Smith’s toughness while acknowledging the importance of grip strength for linemen. T.J. Bass will replace Smith in the lineup for the season opener against the New York Giants.
