Former England Captain Michael Atherton Concerned Over Rise in Three-Day Test Matches

Former England captain Michael Atherton has expressed concern about the significant increase in Test matches ending within three days, a stark contrast to the 1990s when only 7% of Tests concluded so quickly, a number that has now risen to about 20%. Atherton attributes this trend to the influence of T20 cricket leading to higher-risk batting, the quality of modern fast bowling attacks, the impact of the Decision Review System on LBW decisions, and the focus on home advantage in the ICC World Test Championship resulting in more bowler-friendly pitches. As three-day Tests become more prevalent, Atherton suggests a broader discussion on maintaining the balance between bat and ball in Test cricket.
