Right-hander Dan Altavilla has opted out of his minor league deal with the Royals and is now a free agent, according to Jon Heyman. The 33-year-old had been with Triple-A Omaha since late May, posting a 5.11 ERA in 20 games, with poor walk and strikeout rates. Prior to joining the Royals, he had a 7.32 ERA with Triple-A St. Paul after being released by the Twins. Altavilla will seek opportunities based on his overall MLB performance, which includes a 4.00 ERA over 148 2/3 innings.
