Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has a history of imposing assistant coaches on his head coaches, including hiring Jason Garrett in 2007 as offensive coordinator under Wade Phillips. Recently, Jones guaranteed Brian Schottenheimer a role as offensive coordinator regardless of the outcome of the 2025 head coaching search, which Schottenheimer confirmed in a podcast. Schottenheimer was ultimately hired as head coach, finishing his first season with a 7-9-1 record.
