Former NFL running back Doug Martin’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit claiming excessive police force and delayed medical care led to his death in October 2025. The lawsuit names the city of Oakland, several police officers, and an ambulance company as defendants, detailing that Martin was experiencing a mental health crisis before police restrained him and failed to call for medical help in a timely manner. Martin, who was 36, died in police custody after a struggle during his detainment related to a break-in incident. The Alameda County Coroner’s Office is still awaiting autopsy results, as requested by his family.
