Automated Ball-Strike System Coming to MLB
MLB has confirmed the implementation of the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system for the 2026 season, following successful trials in minor leagues since 2022. Players can challenge pitches only if they are the batter, catcher, or pitcher, with teams allowed two challenges per game, and additional challenges in extra innings. The ABS strike zone is player-specific and smaller than the traditional zone, which may require adjustment for players and umpires. This system aims to reduce obvious call errors while maintaining the role of umpires during games.
