The Detroit Red Wings have recalled forward John Leonard from AHL Grand Rapids while sending down defenseman Erik Gustafsson. Leonard, 27, has been impressive in the AHL, ranking third in scoring with 29 points and leading with 19 goals, making him a potential spark for the Wings following Mason Appleton‘s injury. Although Gustafsson has been a depth option with limited NHL appearances this season, his return to Grand Rapids could aid the Griffins’ strong performance. Leonard’s AHL success may finally help him secure a consistent NHL role after years of bouncing between leagues.
