Arnie Brown, a former Rangers defenseman who later joined the Islanders, made a controversial statement before an Isles-Rangers game in February 1973, saying, “The Rangers will probably beat us. But there’s no great shame attached to losing to those guys,” which led to his trade to Atlanta for Ernie Hicke and “future considerations” shortly after. Brown’s effectiveness had diminished in his final year with the Rangers.
