The NBA will trial the one free throw rule during its July summer leagues in Northern California, Salt Lake City, and Las Vegas, a rule aimed at enhancing game flow that has been in effect in the G League since 2019-20. This rule allows a single free throw for any foul that typically results in one to three free throws, with the attempt valued at the same points. Standard free throw regulations will apply in the final two minutes and during overtime. Additionally, the league will test a ball embedded with a sensor to detect contact during the summer leagues.
