The Mets claimed infielder Tsung-Che Cheng off waivers from the Rays, adding him to their roster after he played three games for the Pirates last season, going 0-for-7 with three strikeouts. The 24-year-old, who has experience at shortstop, second, and third base, was originally signed by the Pirates in 2019. With the recent acquisition of Bo Bichette, who will transition to third base, Cheng is expected to provide minor league depth at Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets’ infield will also include Francisco Lindor, Marcus Semien, and potentially Jorge Polanco and Mark Vientos.
