The Nationals have signed first baseman Matt Mervis to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. Mervis, who has struggled in the majors with a .165 average over 78 games, has shown promise in the minors, hitting 56 home runs with a .257/.354/.510 line from 2023 to 2025. With Washington’s first base position wide open after the release of Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Bell‘s departure, Mervis could be a low-cost option. If successful, he can be retained cheaply due to his service time status.
