Connelly Early impressed in his brief MLB debut with a 2.33 ERA over 19 1/3 innings for the Red Sox last September, but the team has not initiated discussions for a long-term contract, partly due to his agency’s typical approach. With only 20 days of service time, Boston may want to evaluate his potential further before making commitments, especially as they have other pitching options. Early, along with Payton Tolle, may start the season in Triple-A to preserve additional control. The Red Sox have secured long-term deals for other young players but might be cautious with Early’s early career status.
