The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled defenseman William Villeneuve from AHL Toronto to provide an extra player at practices while Oliver Ekman-Larsson competes in the Olympics. Villeneuve, a fourth-round pick in 2020, enjoyed a breakout season last year but has struggled this season with only 18 points in 40 games and a -8 rating. Despite his decline, he remains Toronto’s No. 5 prospect and is likely to receive a qualifying offer as a pending restricted free agent. He could make his NHL debut if the team trades a defender before the deadline.
