The Mets have designated infielder Tsung-Che Cheng for assignment to make room for right-hander Luis García. Cheng, 24, has never played for the Mets, having been in the Pirates’ system prior, where he made limited appearances. He has strong defensive skills but inconsistent offensive performance, with a .217/.319/.312 line over the past two seasons. The Mets will have a week to explore trade options or place him on waivers.
