The Tampa Bay Rays have claimed infielder Tsung-Che Cheng off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, who designated him for assignment last month. Cheng, 24, signed with the Pirates in 2019 and reached Double-A by the end of the 2023 season, boasting a solid defensive reputation and a decent offensive output with a .278/.352/.456 slash line. Although his performance declined over the past two years, he has potential playing time with the Rays, given their unsettled middle infield situation. Cheng has an option remaining, allowing him to be sent to Triple-A for regular play if needed.
