The Pittsburgh Pirates are designating reliever Chase Shugart for assignment to create a 40-man roster spot for Ryan O’Hearn, whose contract was finalized. Shugart, acquired from the Red Sox, had a 3.40 ERA in 35 games this season but struggled with strikeouts and ground balls. After a knee injury sidelined him, he made only three appearances in the second half. With one year of big league service and a remaining minor league option, he may attract interest on waivers.
