The Phillies have designated right-handed reliever Carlos Hernández for assignment, recalling Michael Mercado from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill his roster spot. Hernández, who was acquired from the Royals in spring training, struggled significantly with a 5.26 ERA over 25 2/3 innings, allowing 15 earned runs and posting poor strikeout and walk rates. He will be placed on waivers or traded within the next five days as the Phillies evaluate their options for the hard-throwing righty.
