The Chicago Cubs have released reliever Julian Merryweather, who had been designated for assignment after a poor start to the season, yielding 13 runs (12 earned) in 18 2/3 innings. Merryweather, 33, struggled with injuries, including a rib fracture and knee tendinitis, leading to a 6.60 ERA last season and a 6.15 earned runs average since the start of 2024. He is currently on a $1.25MM arbitration salary, and if he clears waivers, the Cubs will be responsible for that amount, while he can seek opportunities with other teams at a lower cost.
